Panama Gloves

For two intense years in Panama City, Panama, Wayne McLennan
managed the careers of two remarkable fighters: Jonathon ‘Agua’ Arias
De Jesus, a fearless Dominican boxer battling in main events, and
Olga ‘La Cobra’ Julio, a seasoned Colombian fighter who has
contended five times for a world title.
Both emerged from impoverished Afro-Caribbean communities,
chasing greatness in a region where the fight outside the ring is o_ en
the hardest. Agua, living undocumented in Panama, is forced to
navigate a world of extortion and exploitation, while Olga must
confront the twin stigmas of being a woman and openly gay in one
of the world’s most hyper-masculine sports.
Set against the vibrant backdrop of Panama’s street life, carnival
colour, and fight-night spectacle, Panama Gloves, is a raw and moving
portrait of ambition, injustice, and resilience. It captures both the
hardship and the shimmer of a world where people make magic from
nothing and fight not just for glory, but survival.
